What is Included: Airfare, accommodations, breakfasts and dinners (in Senegal and the Gambia), excursions, international health insurance coverage, visa fees, and tips.

A non-refundable program deposit of $350 is due on December 2nd to confirm your place on the program. The balance of $3,450 is due on January 21st and will be billed to your student account.
What is not Included: Students should anticipate bringing $300 for lunches and personal expenses (for example, incidentals, snacks, meals at the airport, souvenirs).

Students will need to obtain immunizations prior to departure, estimated at roughly $250-$400. Please visit the CDC's website posted on this page for more information and plan a visit to Guilford County's International Travel clinic.

A valid passport book is required to travel abroad. The cost for a first time applicant is $135.

Program Description

Spend your spring break exploring the unique cultural traditions of Senegal and the Gambia! As part of participation in this experience, students must enroll in PSYC 501: Special Topics in Developmental Psychology for the Spring 2014 semester. The course is open to both undergraduate and graduate students.

Highlights of the program include:

-Visiting a traditional African community as reflected in the book, Roots and its major location, Juffureh, Gambia.
-Obtain a better understanding about slavery from the African perspective and how it disrupted African communities and families.
-Observe both traditional and "modern" approaches to educating youth in Gambia.
-Observe how the 21st century Gambians celebrate, build and maintain community.
-Engaging in a discussion, with the locals, on traditional family and community ways of the Fulani.
-Exploring the vital role of market life in both family and community development.

Students are eligible for the OIP Travel Grant. Please find the application located in the program information above. The Travel Grant can award up to $500 for participation in a study tour (travel imbedded within a course). Travel Grants are competitive and actual award amount may vary. The application deadline for the OIP Travel Grant is January 13, 2014.
